We’ve highlighted the region's hottest events to give you and your customers an exclusive insight into the live shows and family attractions that are taking place on the Yorkshire Coast and North York Moors this August.

What's hot on the Coast this summer?

Festival of Cycling

Scarborough Cycling Festival

 

Oliver's Mount is the host venue for Scarborough Festival of Cycling in August.

Over the weekend of Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th, a variety of bike-based activities and events will take place, catering for everyone from first-time pedal pushers to seasoned cyclists. 

Highlights of the two day festival will include Closed Circuit Road, Cyclo Cross Racing, Sportive and 'Come and Try' events.

The first of a trio of Eat Yorkshire Food Festivals takes place at Filey Evron Centre across August 12th-13th.

The Eat Yorkshire events are an ideal opportunity for local chefs, confectioners, bakers and brewers to showcase their creations, and, as you might expect, a flavour-filled, mouth-watering weekend for Filey-going food lovers.

Building on the success of last year's events, three family-friendly Food Festival weekends will take place in August, September and October, exhibiting everything from chillis, cheeses and chutneys, breads, beers and biscuits, to meats, sweets and savoury treats!

Whitby Regatta

Whitby Regatta

 

One of the oldest regattas in England returns this August for three full days of water-based, family entertaintment.

Established in the early 19th Century by local fishermen looking to best one another in competition, Whitby Regatta features yacht racing, competitive rowing, free-form entertainment around the town, a fun fair and a prizegiving ceremony, all rounded out by a spectacular fireworks display.

The Regatta runs across Saturday 19th - Monday 21st August.

Fun meets Factual at Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle is serving up a super selection of summer holiday activities this August, helping you to keep the kids' boredom at bay. 

The Hands on History crew are ready to take you back to Medieval Times with dress up play, dancing and sword fighting throughout August, Roman Scarborough, on Saturday 5th-Sunday 6th August offers you and your little centurions the chance to race chariots, while Scarborough at War, 19th-20th August takes an interactive look at Scarborough during the First and Second World Wars.

Celebrate tradition at Danby Agricultural Show

Danby agricultural show

Danby Agricultural Show is the oldest show of its kind in the area, having being established in 1848 by Canon Atkinson, promises a wholesome day out for the whole family.

The show continues to welcome thousands of attendees every year, with over 6,000 people expected to celebrate the rich history and tradition on Wednesday 16th August.

In keeping with previous shows you can enjoy sheep dog trials, displays of vintage tractors and farm machinery, numerous competitions, and horse and pony classes.

The YMCA Theatre in Scarborough is a long-established hub of the community, and the venue has an exciting new schedule, packed with great shows coming up this month.

It's a case of sibling rivalry as Sister Act The Musical is joined on August's bill by Blues Brothers, beginning Friday 4th August. The roster also features Musical Mashup, running all through the month, West End Nights which begins on Friday 11th August, while the programme is completed on Friday 18th by The Cloughton Rat Pack.

Scarborough Spa, has two fantastic musical productions taking place throughout August. First up, Teddy Bears' Picnics with the Spa Orchestra provides 90 minutes of child-friendly, audience participation, with the chance for you and your youngsters to sing along, play along and dance along with the musicians on stage. The Teddy Bears' Picnics will happen every Monday throughout August. Showdates for your diary are the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.

Secondly, the UK's longest-running summer show returns to the Spa stage, with Movies Meets The Musicals: Take 2. Expect a sensational cast including stunning vocalists, dazzling costumes and sparkling sets all with a bit of Hollywood glitz! The showbiz extravaganzas take place each Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout August with the first performance taking place on the Thursday 3rd.

Pushing the boat out at Staithes RNLI fundraiser

The popular Staithes & Runswick RNLI Lifeboat Weekend returns this month, running between Friday 18th-Sunday 20th August.

Kicking off with the traditional Nightgown Parade on Friday night, the event will also feature lifeboat rescue displays, cliff rescue demonstrations, raft races, stalls and games. Saturday features a seafront barbeque and a fireworks display, while the highlight of Sunday is the much-anticipated Duck Race!

Proceeds benefit the Staithes & Runswick Lifeboat which provides 24/7/365 cover for the area.

Everybody wants a piece of the Traction

Traction engine rally

It's full steam ahead for Whitby Traction Engine Rally, which takes place next to Whitby Abbey, over the weekend of 4th-6th August.

Main attractions for the event include The Adrenaline Tour featuring Jason Smyth, performing motorcycle and quad street style stunts. The Crazy Bears will be on stage over the three days providing hours of entertainment.

The Traction Engine Rally will also feature tractor pulling, classic cars & motorcycles, miniature steam engines, fairground organs, vintage commercials, trade stands and catering & licensed bar.

Full month of music for Filey Bandstand

Filey Bandstand

Filey Bandstand showcases 4 shows across 4 Sundays in August.

Set in the picturesque Crescent Gardens, the venue welcomes Altofts and Normanton Brass Band on Sunday 6th, Hunmanby & District Silver Band on the 13th, before Malton White Star Band entertain on the 20th, and the month's schedule is completed by Yorkshire Traction Honley Silver Band on Sunday 27th.

The summer has proved unpredictable so far, so if rain stops play then the performances will be relocated to St. John's Church.

Kick start your Scarborough Seafest weekend by soaking up the fresh sea breeze on a Guided Coastal Walk brought to you by the Family Holiday Association and Hidden Horizons.

Let the kids explore all of the creatures found along the foreshore and discover Jurassic dinosaur footprints hidden in the rocks. If that’s not enough, dive into an underwater adventure with out-of-hours access to Scarborough SEALIFE sanctuary included in the ticket price.
